L-Carnosine, also known as simply Carnosine, is a naturally occurring di-peptide, which is a combination of two amino acids. It is found in muscle, brain and other tissues. It is widely believed to be an antioxidant, which stabilizes and protects the cell membrane from environmental and free radical damage. In fact, it has even been shown to increase levels of Vitamin E in rats.

Although it was discovered over 100 years ago, only recently have scientists discovered its potential benefits as a supplement.

Although it does not directly affect growth hormones, this ingredient does appear to have some anti-aging benefits. According to scientists, Carnosine helps to prevent glycosylation, the cross linking of proteins and DNA molecules. Cross-linking is what causes the white flesh of an apple to turn yellow when exposed to the open air. In humans, glycosylation is partly responsible for cataracts, kidney failure, and dull, tired-looking skin.

Carnosine has also been shown to extend the life of cells, which seems to have obvious anti-aging applications.

However, Carnosine supplement has probably been most enthusiastically greeted by the bodybuilding community, since it has been shown to reduce lactic acid buildup in muscles, allowing athletes to work out harder and longer before “feeling the burn.”

Although Carnosine does seem to have a number of applications, many of which relate to aging, they are nonetheless quite specific. For example, it has been shown to work well in eyedrops as a treatment for cataracts. However, more research is still necessary before this ingredient is proven to increase longevity in humans.

Those who are interested in boosting their metabolism and regaining (or maintaining) their youthful looks and energy may want to consider a supplement that stimulates the pituitary gland in order to increase growth hormone production.
